Trailblazer Irrigation Study Tour

The Trailblazer Irrigation Study Tour was introduced in 2023 in response to feedback from growers involved in the Awards in the years prior, many were interested in further sustainable irrigation learning opportunities and the chance to network with other growers involved in the Awards.

Following the success of the inaugural tour a study tour will be added as a regular bi-annual fixture in between the Award years and will visit different locations related to advancements in irrigation infrastructure, technology, policy, and sustainable application.

What was the greatest value of the tour?

“The people I met, the relationships I formed, and an increased awareness with respect to water and nutrient management. I was also impressed by the quality and experience of the other participants. All the people in the group were seriously good farmers and were passionate about minimizing the adverse effects of their farming operations on the environment. It was without a doubt one of the best study tours that I have been on.”

Simon Burgess | Operating Partner, Racecourse Projects | Sunnyside, Australia

“Meeting amazing people from Australia, New Zealand, and Washington was the greatest value of the tour for me. I learned a lot from each of them. It was a memorable experience that I will cherish forever. I am looking forward to working with farmers from Washington in the future.”

Sonia Thais Menegaz | Sustainability Associate - Proterra Investment Partners | Minneapolis, Minnesota

“The value of any tour is not what you see but who you meet. We had a group from three countries; from corporate and family-farming backgrounds; involved in intensive livestock, dryland, irrigated, and high-input irrigated cropping; hailing from tropical and temperate farming regions. They included natural resource managers as well as water industry experts and supporters. It was a genuinely good group of people from diverse backgrounds who enjoyed each other’s company. We also met with equally impressive people and businesses.”

Brendan Watson | Property and Infrastructure Manager - Kilter Rural | Bendigo, Australia
